Greenford CPZ: Residents Could Face Hundreds of Pounds in Annual Parking Charges

CPZ

Thousands of Greenford residents may soon be forced to pay hundreds of pounds annually just to park outside their own homes, under controversial new Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) proposals by Ealing Council.

Back in 2017, an overwhelming 93% of residents rejected a similar CPZ plan. Despite this, the Labour-run council has resurrected the proposals, seemingly ignoring the clear voice of the community.

The revived plans cover two areas encompassing much of Greenford: Greenford South CPZ and Greenford Town Centre CPZ. Some residents affected by these proposals live as far as a 20-minute walk from Greenford Broadway, sparking questions about the necessity and fairness of the zones.

Outrage is mounting, with residents taking to social media to voice their frustrations. Many highlight the crippling financial burden these charges would impose, especially during a cost-of-living crisis marked by soaring energy prices and the removal of winter fuel payments for pensioners.

In Greenford Town Centre, numerous bungalows are home to elderly residents, many of whom are already struggling financially. Losing their £300 winter fuel payment has added to their challenges, and the introduction of CPZ charges would compound this burden. Some pensioners may have to choose between heating their homes and keeping their cars, which are vital for maintaining independence.

This loss of mobility could lead to increased social isolation and accelerate health conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, placing further strain on their mental and physical well-being.

Residents are encouraged to share their views on the council's consultation page: https://www.ealing.gov.uk/info/201042/current_consultations/3424/new_controlled_parking_zones_in_greenford
